Excerpts from the Lars John Redberg Diaries of 1909 - 1912 of Life in South Tillamook County especially of Oretown, Oregon.
Edna Redberg very kindly excerpted these interesting portions of the Lars John Redberg Diaries and provided them to NVMS. Nestucca Valley Middle School students typed these excerpts during the fall of 2002 as part of their technology classes. Note that the complete diaries of Lars John Redberg spanning many years are in the Pioneer Museum in Tillamook, Oregon. They were donated by Erwin and Edna Redberg.
The following diary entries were typed by Eli, 7th grader, and Robbie, 6th grader, during the fall of 2002 and were edited by Dean Bones. Page 10 - January 1909 - October 5, 1909(Note that included in this page of entries are some terms that are especially by modern standards considered very derogatory against several people groups. The diary entries have been typed as they were written, however, with the hope that people will view them in their context and that students will be led by teachers in discussions about prejudice.)
Nov. 8, 1910 - I stayed up all night with Gertie and the children. Viola was very sick all night. Mrs. Porter was at home.
Nov. 10, 1910 - Gertie was a bit better, but Viola was worse. Herbert & Frankie are some better. I have not regained my voice.
Nov. 11, 1910 - Gertie was worse again. Viola a bit better. I gained a bit of voices & the boys are about the same. Mrs. Porter is back. Jessie Follett doing the work again.
Nov. 14, 1910 - I pickled some apples. Frankie and Herbert helped me.
Nov. 17, 1910 - Ole & I hauled wood for Father & Mother.
Nov. 18, 1910 - Mr. Porter, Ole and I hauled road planks again with 3 teams.
Nov. 21, 1910 - We all attended Grange today. Brother B. G. Leady, State Grange Deputy, was present and instructed us in Grange work.
Nov. 22, 1910 - Gertrude was very sick again today.
Nov. 23, 1910 - Irve Smith and his sister, Ms. Hoffman, came in the evening.
Nov. 24, 1910 - Ole, Mr. Dawson, and I started for Sheridan this A.M., with 3 teams and 18 Japs and Chinamen from the cannery. We nooned at Baxters and stayed at the 'Midway'and Leno's the first night. The road is very bad.
Nov. 25, 1910 - Arrived at Willamina and left the men there. Ole and I went on to Sheridan and stayed there this night.
Nov. 26, 1910 - Left Sheridan this A.M. and stayed at the "Bee Ranch" this night. Mr. Dawson started for home yesterday. Roads are very bad. One of the mail carriers broke his rig down this evening just after dark. Mr.Livingston and Mrs. Campfield are coming in with us. Mrs. Campfield rides With Ole, and Mr. Livingston rides his pony.
Nov. 27, 1910 - Snow on ground this morning. Cold and disgreeable today. We arrived home this evening at 5:30 P.M. We got $25.00 each (3 teams), for handing the Japs and Chinamen to Willamina. Today while fording the river, second crossing below Baxter, Mr. Livingston´s pony fell in the ford, and he, with his pony were carried with the swift current downstream.
